Our Story
In India, matchboxes were once more than everyday objects. They were tiny canvases of vintage Indian matchbox art, carrying stories of Indian culture, design, politics, and everyday life. Sitting unnoticed in pockets and kitchen drawers, these handcrafted labels featured bold illustrations, cultural icons, and fragments of a now-forgotten design history.
From mythological motifs to political satire, from local mascots to film stars, these miniature works of Indian graphic art reflected who we were and what we believed in. But like many things analogue, this rich tradition of Indian matchbox art slowly faded, replaced by mass production and minimalist design.
Maachis is an art revival project reimagining these tiny canvases as a contemporary medium of storytelling. We transform forgotten matchbox labels into handcrafted wooden matchboxes, collectible design objects, and functional art that celebrate the intersection of Indian art, culture, nostalgia, and contemporary design.
Every Maachis piece is designed to be more than a matchbox. It is a designer collectible, a conversation starter, a meaningful keepsake, and a unique Indian gift that preserves the spirit of India's forgotten matchbox art while giving it a new life for today's generation.
